Kayaking on Maui
I love to go kayaking on maui since I always see so many interesting things. Even if I didn’t I just love being out on the water.
One very important thing to know, go out in the morning. If it’s windy, and that’s how the afternoons typically are, don’t go. It’s no fun paddling into the waves and fighting the wind and the current. The mornings, unless it’s a very unusual day, are calm and make for a much more fun adventure. And a safe one as well.
Here are some of my favorite spots for kayaking on maui. And by the way, you can rent a kayak and put it on top of your car, or you can go with a tour.
· The Kihei coast is excellent, starting at Cove Park
· Along the Kamaole Beaches
· In front of Wailea
· In front of the Prince Hotel, in an area called Turtle Town
· Makena, by Little Beach, but access from north of that beach because Big Beach is treacherous
· Ahihi Bay
· La Perouse
· Olowalu is a great spot
· Kapalua Bay and north of there in Honolua Bay
I love going during whale season and I have gotten pretty close. Or shall I say the whales have come close to me. Not to worry though. I have not ever heard of an incident where the whale dumps the kayak.
Kayaking is easy and a beginner can do it. Watch a youtube video that offers some instruction or just sit on the beach and watch someone who is out there doing it. You’ll get the hang of it. And when you are in a tandem kayak, make certain that you both paddle in unison otherwise, you’ll get disgusted and mad at each other. That is annoying!
Always lather on sunscreen prior to your outdoor activity. Be careful putting it on your forehead as most of them sting when they get into your eyes. Bring a hat, sunglasses and a housing for your camera or buy a waterproof camera because you’ll see turtles, dolphins, whales, flying fish and who knows what else!!
